2017 Annual Celebration / Networking Event
Guest Speaker: Lisa Baird, Chief Marketing Officer for the United States Olympic Committee
All local Penn Staters (and friends of the University) are invited to join us on Tuesday, June 6 at the Cornell Club in Manhattan for an evening of networking and merriment at the Penn State NYC Annual Celebration / Networking Event. Admission to the event includes food and drink. The NYC Chapter Board of Directors is thrilled to announce Lisa Baird as the guest speaker this year! Lisa is currently the Chief Marketing Officer for the United States Olympic Committee and is a Liberal Arts and Smeal College of Business grad.
We're excited to announce we'll be joined by several additional special guests including:
- Paul Clifford, Life Member and CEO of the Penn State Alumni Association
- John Gilmore ('01), Executive Director and Co-Founder of Brandthumb, former NFL player
- Erica Grow ('02), meteorologist for WNBC, the flagship of the NBC station group
- Tanisha Wright (’05), WNBA professional basketball player
This event is an annual opportunity for local Penn Staters to celebrate the great year we had as a Chapter and learn about our plans and goals for the upcoming year. We'll be raffling off great prizes, including PSU Football Tickets, Mets Tickets (7/15), a City Winery Tour and a gift certificate to the Chester to benefit our Scholarship Fund. Members of the Chapter will have an opportunity to vote for the 2017-18 Executive Board.

Registration: Registration fee includes hors d’oeuvres, a pasta station, and unlimited wine, beer & soft drinks.

About Lisa Baird
As the Chief Marketing Officer of the United States Olympic Committee, Lisa Baird has helped the Team USA brand grow into one of the most recognized, admired and successful sports brands in the world. Baird’s commitment to innovative marketing has seen her named to the board of trustees of the Women’s Sport Foundation and the board of directors of GK Elite, the world leader in gymnastics and cheerleading apparel and uniforms. Prior to joining the USOC in 2009, Lisa served as a senior vice president of marketing at the NFL, and previously held similar executive level positions at IBM, General Motors, and Proctor & Gamble. She has been awarded with both the WISE Woman of the Year and Sports Business Journal Game Changer honors as well as receiving the Alumni Fellow Award from her alma mater, Penn State University.
Paul J. Clifford is the chief executive officer of the Penn State Alumni Association and associate vice president for alumni relations for Penn State. He is the organization’s 11th chief executive in its 146-year history and began his tenure in January 2016.
With 176,427 members, the Penn State Alumni Association is the largest dues-paying alumni association of its kind worldwide. The Alumni Association’s mission is to connect alumni to the University and to each other; provide valued services to members; and support the University’s mission of teaching, research, and service.
Clifford guides Penn State’s alumni relations strategy; oversees engagement initiatives with the Alumni Association’s 176,000+ members and 315 affiliate groups; leads a 70-member staff; and manages the Alumni Association’s broad range of programs, benefits, services, and resources, including a $12.5 million annual operating budget.
A Pennsylvania native, Clifford joined Penn State after serving as the University of Oregon’s associate vice president of advancement and executive director of the University of Oregon Alumni Association. Clifford has spent his entire career in the alumni relations field and has broad national experience. A 12-time CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) Award winner, Clifford has served on or chaired myriad CASE committees and is a five-time faculty member for the organization’s Summer Institute for Alumni Relations.
John Gilmore (’01) is the co-founder and Executive Director of Brandthumb, a boutique marketing agency focused on building brands and developing innovative strategies to achieve outstanding results. Brandthumb connects clients to a unique network of marketing experts, business professionals, and professional athletes to drive brand recognition and loyalty.
Prior to starting Brandthumb, John was an NFL player for several teams, including the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He graduated from Penn State with a BS in Recreation and Parks Management in 2001, where he was also a four-year letterman. John has been involved in many community and philanthropic activities, including the Gilmore | Henne Community Fund, Family Resources, Inc., and The Centre for Women, Inc. John currently lives in Tampa, Fl., with his wife and two children.
Erica Grow (EMS '02, AOPi, THON) is a meteorologist for WNBC, the flagship of the NBC station group located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. She provides the forecast for the weekend editions of “News 4 New York” at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Prior to coming to NBC 4 New York, Grow was weekend evening meteorologist for WUSA in Washington, DC. Erica has also delivered the forecast to viewers in Philadelphia, Central Pennsylvania, West Texas, and Connecticut earlier in her career.
Erica graduated from Penn State with a degree in Meteorology in 2002. As an alumna, she has continued her connection to the University by serving on the planning committees for the Liberty Ball in Philadelphia and the Knight of Diamonds Gala in Washington, DC.
In 2012, Grow earned the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation from the American Meteorological Society, and she currently serves in two Board positions for the AMS.
Tanisha Wright (’05) is a WNBA professional basketball player born in Brooklyn, New York but raised in West Mifflin, PA. Tanisha led the Lady Lions to two Sweet Sixteen appearances and one Elite Eight appearance while advancing to the NCAA tournament every year in her 4 year career. She is still the only 3 time Defensive Player of the Year in the Big Ten Conference. Tanisha graduated from Penn State in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Sociology.
After graduation the Seattle Storm selected Tanisha with the 12th pick of the WNBA draft. She went on to play ten years in Seattle, becoming a WNBA champion in 2010 and a Five Time All-Defensive First Team Selection, before moving back east and playing two more years for the New York Liberty, where she also garnered two All-Defensive Second Team selections.
Although Tanisha has been successful on the court she strives to make just as much of an impact off the court. She created SkysTheLimit Investments LLC, a company that invests in real estate in her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. The company buys single-family properties to rent out to those who may not have the means, but wish to live in a place they can call their own.
