Virtual Wine Tasting Series

Join the PSU NYC Chapter for a wine tasting series with Susan Ellis, a fellow Penn State New Yorker, as she shares her expertise as a sommelier for a series virtual wine tastings!  You can sign up for our next class(es) with all proceeds benefitting the Michael D. Ferugio Scholarship Fund!  By popular demand, we have added 3 new classes! Information on those classes can be found here!


Event Details

Where: Zoom (Registrants will be sent the Zoom link a day prior to the event)

When: All sessions will take place from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PMish

  

Session 1: Perfect Wines for Thanksgiving - COMPLETE

When: Thursday, November 19 

Summary: After a quick Wine 101 lesson, we will jump right in to discuss a few options

to make your Thanksgiving Day special and enhance your meal

Featured Wines: Cava, White Bordeux, Beaujolias, Sauternes

  

Session 2: Sparkling Wines for the Holidays - COMPLETE

When: Tuesday, December 15 

Summary: We will discuss the advantages of sparkling wines, from inexpensive to very expensive, and the different regions producing the wines.  We’ll also learn why and how they are different and what to look for on labels to be able to make more informed decisions.    

Featured Wines: Prosecco, Cava, Crement, Champagne

  

Session 3: Low Alcohol Wines - COMPLETE

When: Thursday, January 7, 2021

Summary: Instead of giving up drinking completely, we will learn about wines which are lower in alcohol so you can cut back without giving up wine entirely.    

Featured Wines: Heinz Eifel Spatlese Riesling 2018, Benazzoli Fulvio Bardolino 2019, Scarpetta Frico Lambrusco 

 

Session 4: Romantic Wine Regions - COMPLETE

When: Friday, February 12, 2021

Summary: For couples, friends, friends who might become couples....We’ll explore 3 romantic wine destinations, what makes them so popular for love and the wines that add to the experience!  Half bottles available for easy shipping/less waste.  

Featured Wines: El Libre Malbec 2019, Domaine Eric Louis Sophie Bertin Savuigon Blanc, Margaret Pingotage

 

Session 5: Not Your Mother's California Wines! - COMPLETE

When: Wednesday, March 24, 2021

Summary: The state known best for its big Cabs and oaky Chardonnays has a lot more to offer! A new generation of winemakers are adjusting to climate changes and the availability of non-traditional Cali grapes to create wines with European sensibilities and a stimulating American twist.

Featured Wines: Folk Machine White Light, Nomadica Red Wine Blend, 2014 Tete-a-Tete

 

Session 6: Welcome Happier Times

When: Thursday, April 22, 2021

Summary: We’ll be done with taxes and maybe we’ll be able to really travel, but if not, let’s pretend we’ve booked a trip to Italy!  Specifically, we’ll be in Northeast Italy, the land of Brunellos and Barolos, big red wines.  But we’ll explore the lighter, and more affordable, offers of the region through 3 varieties and a special treat from the area.

How to Purchase the Wine

Option 1: Have the wine shipped to your house by purchasing them directly from Susan at a discounted rate with 5% of the proceeds going to the Michael D. Ferugio Scholarship Fund.  Details on how to purchase will be included in your confirmation e-mail.  (Please Note: Wines must be purchased by the Friday before the event in order to allow enough time to ship the wines)

Option 2: Prior to the event, a list of wines that will be discussed will be sent out to attendees.  These wines will be commonly available from your local liquor store, but Susan will speak about the wine in generalities so you also don't need to worry about purchasing the exact wine!
